When there is high demand in the grid, some areas seeing the high demand are not able to receive sufficient cheap power due to transmission congestion.
The utility then has to buy more expensive power from a local source to take care of that demand.
With storage, utilities can get a cheaper localised power source that can address high prices during periods of temporary high demand.
