Increasing electricity demand, and a variable energy source-based grid, has led to a situation where utilities have to invest in upgrades to their transmission and distribution network. This is an expensive capital investment.
By supplementing the current network with storage capacity, utilities can avoid having to spend large amounts on new infrastructure. It also makes the grid more efficient and nimble. Storage even extends the life of existing T&D equipment.
