Black start

In the event of a complete shutdown of the transmission system, power generation plants or parts of the power grid need an external energy source to be up and running. If all of the plant’s main generators are shut down, the station’s service power is provided by drawing power from the grid through the plant’s transmission line. However, during a wide-area outage, off-site power from the grid is not available.

A black start is the process of restoring an electric power station or a part of a grid to operation without relying on the external power grid.

Storage systems are a great option in these situations. They can ramp up their operations near instantaneously to meet the requirements of having to act as a kickstarter.
